“It’s disastrous on a professional level,” the actress said in 2003, a few years after winning a supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of artist Lee Krasner, the wife of troubled painter Jackson Pollock, in Ed Harris’ “Pollock.” “Suddenly the parts you’re offered and the money become smaller. There’s no logic to it.”

Those drawbacks seem to have had minimal impact on Harden during the last few years, as she’s ridden a steady flow of featured roles in several high-profile projects on stage and screen. She has injected her blend of warmth and smooth toughness to recent films (“Grandma”) and vehicles such as HBO’s “The Newsroom,” ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” and NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” She scored a Tony Award in 2009 for lead actress in a play for “God of Carnage” and last year played Christian Grey’s mother in the hit film version of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Q: What attracted you to the role in “Code Black”?

A: Who wouldn’t want to play a commando? Dr. Rorish is a whirlwind in the ER, and snaps people into shape with the bark of her voice…I could tell it was going to be a great challenge, and that’s ALWAYS WHAT I am looking for…A challenge!

Q: How would you describe your character, ER Residency Director Dr. Leanne Rorish?

A: Leanne is a no BS Emergency room Residency Director. She is fierce, tough, & purposeful, with a heartache the size of the Mississippi. She practices battlefield medicine, and with cowboy nonchalance and MacGyveresque ingenuity saves lives. And all the while, she schools. She teaches. Every action is about teaching her residents to become better doctors, and better people.

Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden stars as a single Los Angeles librarian who discovers adventure and romance in Costa Rica.

Making his feature debut after a substantial career in other filmmaking roles, director Juan Feldman delivers an awkward dramedy that hews closely to TV-movie conventions in its account of a distraught middle-aged woman seeking escape from her unremarkable life. With Marcia Gay Harden in the lead, the film clearly aspires to theatrical validation, although smaller screens may prove more suitable for this day-and-date release.
